While this may not seem like an activity, it is one of the essential things needed to assist with successful transitions. I am talking about transition assessments. Many free transition assessments are available that fit various disability levels. Luckily, you don't have to be an expert in using them. So, why should you use assessments?
Assessments are essential because they help people decide what they want to do, what skills they need to meet their goal, whether they possess those skills, and if there are specific requirements that may negate working in that career. For example, I have had students who wanted to become Marine Biologists. However, when examining their skills, the activities they are interested in, and the needed academic requirements, many concluded that this was not a viable career. Some students will discover this on their own, but there are times that require having an honest and often difficult conversation. Hopefully, whatever assessments are used will help to determine the best path.
Here is a link to a great tool with many transition assessments. It is called the Quick Book of Transition Assessments and was developed by Robin Cline, Special Education Program Representative Dave Halverson, Bev Petersen, Barb Rohrbach, Transition Services Liaison Project Update 2005.
